Building Safe and Strong Neighborhoods: What Works?
Over the next few months neighborhood groups all over Huntington will be getting together to hold discussions about how to build Safe and Strong Neighborhoods. These discussions are sponsored by a coalition of organizations including the Neighborhood Institute, the Cabell County Substance Abuse Prevention Partnership, United Way of the River Cities, Create Huntington, the City of Huntington, Adopt Your Block, the Herald Dispatch, and the West Virginia Center for Civic Life. Last week we held training sessions for those interested in moderating the community discussions. Now it's time to focus on organizing the discussions and making them happen! Please review the information below.

Please forward this information to anyone you think would be interested in participating.

If you’re not able to host a discussion, please plan on attending one. The scheduled discussions will be published in the Herald Dispatch, or you can contact your Neighborhood Association to find out when their discussion will be held. Information is available on the City's website at www.cityofhuntington.com under Residents.

A Citywide Action Summit will be held on May 25th, 2010 from 7:00 to 9:00 pm at the St. Mary's Education Center (the old Big Bear on Fifth Avenue and 29th Street.) Please plan to attend!

We need your opinion!
Tell us what you think about crime and community safety. Your opinions will be used to frame a series of community conversations on the issue that will lead to collective citizen action. Please click here to respond to this brief survey online.

What is the "New Economy"?*
The "new" economy is usually characterized by industry segments that produce and market intellectual property, are enabled by Internet commerce and have a global perspective.

Sometimes referred to as the "creative" economy, it includes industries such as engineering, software development, architectural design, graphic design, research and development, arts and culture, academic services and research, and other "idea-based" industries.

Elements of the "new" economy can help make "old" economy sectors such as manufacturing more competitive and efficient, and so lines can get blurred on the categories.
